Rights of indigenous women and girls

The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women is currently drafting a new general recommendation on the rights of indigenous women and girls. The Committee’s general recommendations are tools used to interpret the UN Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women.

In January 2022, Preparing Our Home convened a Circle of Matriarchs to provide feedback on the general recommendations. This feedback was provided by a group of Indigenous women with over 300 years of collective lived experience as Indigenous girls, women, mothers, and grandmothers representing Blackfoot, Anishinaabe, Diné, Secwepemc, and Bashkir cultures, rights, and responsibilities.

Professionally, we are leaders in Indigenous health, Indigenous law, Indigenous firefighting, Indigenous emergency management, and youth empowerment.

We invite you to read this document and to listen to direct community voices of lived experience.
